WHAT IS BIKRAM YOGA?

Bikram Yoga is a series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises practiced in a room heated to 40° with 40% humidity. The series was designed by Bikram Choudhury to improve strength, flexibility, cardio-vascular fitness, concentration, patience, determination and overall health - it is a one-stop shop for mental, emotional and physical fitness. Every class is beginner friendly and every class is challenging - so whether you are an experienced practitioner or have never done any form of exercise before, all are welcome.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

  • If you have them, bring a BIG towel to go on top of your mat, a towel for your shower afterward, a small padlock for your locker and water to drink during the class. Don’t worry if you don’t have them - we sell or rent everything you need.
  • Dress in comfortable form-fitting exercise clothes.
  • If it’s your first time, come at least 15 minutes before class so you can register and we can show you around.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT?

  • Expect to sweat! Bikram yoga is hot, and it can be challenging. For your first class, you just do the best you can. It’s normal when you start to feel dizzy, light-headed or nauseated. This is temporary, and as you acclimatize to the conditions, it will pass. There is no pressure to “perform” as a beginner, if you need to take a break, you can. The only thing you HAVE to do is Breathe.
  • Expect to be systematically guided through the class with fun and encourage-ment. All of our teachers have been certified by Bikram Choudhury himself. We all passionately believe in this yoga as a healing practice and love to teach, especially beginners.
  • Expect to feel better quickly. We give all first time students a 7 day trial package and highly recommend that you come at least 3 times in that week. Even if your first class is hard, after 2 more you will feel amazing and you will see how this yoga can work for you.

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW?

  • Come to class well-hydrated. It’s a good idea to drink 2 litres of water a day anyway, and if you are coming to class aim to drink a little more.
  • Don’t eat a big meal in the 2 hours before the class. A light snack is ok if you need one, but it’s better not to practice on a full stomach.
  • Don’t be scared. Everyone at BYK was once a first timer like you. It’s normal to be nervous, but we are a big welcoming community. Nobody is judging you, we are very supportive, and you’ll notice people are too fo-cussed on their own practice to see what you are up to.

WHAT OTHER YOGA CLASSES ARE THERE AT BYK?

For people who want want to try other types of yoga, we also have a regular POWER YOGA and VINYASA FLOW Classes. These are 75 minutes yoga classes, with background music and practiced in a non-heated room.

We are trying to provide different types of yoga to our members at BYK to improve and deepen our yoga practice.
